ACCEDER

Monte Jabalcuz

Routes

5 hours

The approach can be done by vehicle from Jaén. We take the Los Villares road to the south of the city and as soon as we leave the urban area we find an access detour to the Fuente de la Peña. It is a spring that supplies some traditional and old public laundries. Two or three kilometers further on we find a detour to the right that takes us to an urbanization built around the old Jabalcuz Spa, very crowded during the first quarter of the last century, but currently in a state of ruin and waiting for a next one rehabilitation. Inside the Spa there is a spring of calcium sulfated water that arises at about 30 degrees of temperature.

Program

After crossing this new neighborhood, before reaching the Arroyo Riocuchillo, a kilometer beyond the urbanization (along the old road, in what was the direction towards Jaén) a track appears (very steep in its first meters) to the left of the road that we will have to take to start the ascent to Mount Jabalcuz. A little more than a kilometer and a half from its beginning we will find a barrier that prevents the passage of motor vehicles. From there the path winds up gently sloping up the northern slope of the mountain between small forests of young pines. At the middle of the mountain slope, the track heads towards its western end, towards the Puerto del Aire (1331 m) between Jabalcuz and the Devil's Ridge, a sharp limestone escarpment that contrasts with the roundness of the mountain that we are going to climb. The track that goes up to the port continues to the opposite side in the direction of Torredelcampo. We will take the detour to the left that goes to the summit.

From the Puerto del Aire the pines end, a bioclimatic floor is reached with high mountain vegetation cover. We will continue our march towards the top, from which we are still three and a half kilometers apart. The path ends 100 meters from the summit (1614 m) where there is a fire watch hut. From this privileged viewpoint you can see to the south the town of Los Villares, the Betic Mountains with Sierra Nevada in the background and to the north Jaén and the Guadalquivir Valley full of towns; as a backdrop Sierra Morena. The descent will be done by the same path that we have brought. Arriving at the Puerto del Aire, you could choose to descend towards the Torredelcampo slope, along a track with similar characteristics, also with restricted motor traffic. This option is longer, unless a vehicle has previously approached the barrier that limits access. In the case of opting for this route, the connection with the Vía Verde del Aceite is recommended, either by all-terrain bicycle or on foot.
