Solera Castle

23569, Huelma How to get

The Castillo de Solera is located in the town of the same name, belonging since 1975 to the municipality of Huelma in the province of Jaén. Andalusia. The ruins of this Arab castle, made of masonry and built on a rocky spire, testify to the difficulties the Christians must have had until they managed to conquer it in 1433. The castle was declared a historical monument in 1985.

It is on a rocky spur at 1,090 metres above sea level and is the highest castle in the province of Jaén. There are two construction phases. At the top there are some irregular-sized masonry walls that delimit a small enclosure to which a cistern is associated that still conserves remains of the pointed vaulting. Further down, there are remains of other larger constructions, a real castle flanked by ashlar masonry towers at the corners and walls that close off the enclosure. The two areas are connected by a passageway covered by a half-barrel vault, also made of masonry, and which still has the remains of plasterwork.

The entire construction is mounted on top of the rock that serves as its foundation. The original walls, which have deteriorated considerably, are masked by recent remodelling.

From the Solera Castle, of Nasrid origin, there are splendid views of the Vega where the Jandulilla and Gargantón rivers meet, as well as the village of Bélmez de la Moraleda and the Lucero Tower, which gives an idea of the defensive system that these lands had in past times.
