Walks in the valley

THE GUADALQUIVIR RESTS IN ITS MOUNTAINS

Here you have much to do, much to see, much more than a river, much more than a valley...

You are in the most visited area of the park, in the corridor that connects the different places of interest. It is the natural contact between the north -the Sierra de Segura- and the south -the Sierra de Cazorla-; the area where the first tourist services of the park were traditionally installed. Here you can find places to rest, visit and walk. And if you move quietly, at the same pace as the Guadalquivir River, walking, you will find a collection of very interesting corners.

In this valley an important part of the waters of the park converge. Dozens of mountain rivers and streams pour their waters from the peaks. Among them there are two that stand out: the Aguamulas and the Borosa, two magnificent mountain courses that will take you, not without effort, along tracks and paths to Las Banderillas (1,993 m.), one of the most mountainous summits in Andalusia. Although if you are interested in shorter walks, in these valleys there are also alternatives as unique as the Cerrada de Elías, on the River Borosa.

On your first visit, and if the year has been one of abundant rain, the surprise of the landscape of the Tranco Reservoir will be a delight. Every autumn, both from the road and from the paths and tracks around the perimeter, every night they offer the overwhelming concert of the bellowing of the deer, the roar of the males in the mating season. One of these paths is the track that starts in the Llanos de Arance and goes to the Cortijo de las Ánimas.

In the vicinity of the reservoir, the Collado del Almendral Wildlife Park, families and groups of friends have an obligatory stop. In a short walk through the forest you can see every evening deer, fallow deer and mountain goats in semi-freedom. Félix Rodríguez de la Fuente used this place as one of his stages in the recording of the famous television series El Hombre y la Tierra. The Interpretation Centre and the Torre del Vinagre Botanical Garden are a good place to understand the biodiversity and cultural richness of the natural park.

The recent and past history of these mountains can be better understood with a visit to the reservoir of the Tranco, a work that has regulated the flow of the great river of Andalusia since the 1950s, or to the historical site of Hornos, an area inhabited since prehistoric times and which leads to the deepest part of these mountains.

If you decide to stay here, take advantage of the place, but above all bear in mind that you are in an area that gives you access to others, such as WHERE EL GUADALQUIVIR IS BORN, THE MOUNTAIN BALCONY, THE HIGHEST CASTLE OR THE MOUNTAIN VILLAGES.
