The northern part of the township is found within the Natural Park of Despeñaperros and its geographic position makes it the most important route between the park and Andalusia. As a result, it has received the nickname the "Puerta de Andalucía" (Gateway to Andalusia).

It is one of the few townships in Jaén with little agricultural activity, with only 1% of its lands being farmed.

The local economy mainly revolves around the mountains, where there is forestry activity, hunting, mushroom harvesting and livestock farming, which is generally cattle farming. With the Andalusia motorway passing by the town, a number of hotels have emerged.

The township also includes two villages: Miranda del Rey and Venta Nueva.

Highlights of the town’s historic heritage include the Iglesia Parroquial de Santa Elena (Parochial Church of Saint Helen), the Iberian Sanctuary of Collado de los Jardines, the town centre and the local cave paintings.
