Génave

Génave is a small township in the north of the Sierra de Segura, in the foothills of Sierra Morena. The majority of the area is included in the Sierras de Cazorla, Segura y Las Villas National Park. Two thirds of the land is mountainous, dominated by forestry and livestock farming. The rest is farmland used to grow mainly rain-fed olives and arable crops.

The town was a strategic enclave which served as a passageway between Andalusia and Castille-La Mancha, and this has defined the town’s fortress character in the middle of an exceptionally beautiful rural landscape.

A particularly important feature of the town’s architectural heritage is the Iglesia Parroquial de la Inmaculada Concepción (Parochial Church of the Immaculate Conception), which was completed at the end of the 15th century in the purest Renaissance style, save for some primitive parts which are of a gothic style (13th century). Other highlights include the Torre de la Tercia tower in the town centre, which was part of the ancient medieval castle.

The township also includes the villages of La Almohadilla, Las Parrillas, Las Atalayas and the castle known as Castillo de la Laguna or Zarrocotín.
