Huelma

Huelma is an important town in the south of the district of Sierra Mágina, just on the border with the province of Granada. The northern third of the township is included in the Sierra Mágina Natural Park and reaches an altitude of more than 2,000 m before descending towards the Jandulilla river to the east. The village of Solera was incorporated into the township of Huelma in 1975. The town is economically of great regional importance, with a strong wooden furniture industry, producing products for both domestic and international markets, and has recovered well from the economic crisis. The ceramic and textile industries are also important here, as is tourism, whether it be for culture, nature or sport.

The majority of the town’s workers are employed in agriculture, followed by the services sector. Olives occupy the most land, followed by cereals and some token plantations of fruit and vegetables. There is also an oil bottler in the town which is part of the Sierra de Mágina Designation of Origin. Livestock farming is also important here, with the rearing of sheep, goats and pigs, as well as mountain sheep, which are originally from the mountainous areas of the province of Granada and the south of the province of Jaén. Huelma is an obligatory stop on the “Viaje al Tiempo de los Íberos” (Journey to the time of the Iberians) since it is home to an Iberian site, dating from the 4th century BC, and the site “Cortijo Pajarillo".
