Farming land makes up more than half of the municipal area, in the south of the township. Olives are the most dominant crop, although the meadows of the Guadalquivir river give rise to vegetable crops, industrial crops and fodder. The local economy revolves around agriculture and olives in particular.

The town witnessed the passing of ancient cultures that have left their mark. Highlights include the cave sanctuary of the Cueva de la Lobera, where remains from the Iberian period have been found, and the Iglesia Ex-colegiata de Santiago (Ex-collegiate Church of Saint James), dating from the 17th century, which was declared a Historic-Artistic Monument in 1983.
