In Alcaudete, there is history on every corner. The town spills out in the shape of a ring on the hillside, encircling its two most distinguished buildings: the Iglesia de Santa María (Church of Saint Mary) and the Castillo Calatravo (Castle Calatravo), from which you can see the surrounding countryside of olive groves and vegetables. The township contains three villages: La Bobadilla, Los Noguerones and El Sabariego, where the white houses stand out against the green of the olive trees.
The medieval town centre is full of important architectural heritage following a great expansion in the 16th and 17th centuries. This led to the construction of a large number of civil and religious buildings in very diverse styles which decorate and beautify the streets of this historic town.
From the fields around the Guadalquivir and the Sierras Subbéticas, the landscape is composed of steep slopes and meadows around the various rivers, giving rise to vegetable crops and a “sea” of olive trees. Within the town’s municipal area are the nature reserves of the lakes Laguna Honda and Laguna del Chinche, an important ecological site for the bird species that live there (stiff-tailed ducks, flamingos, mallards, western swamphens, etc).
