Beas de Segura

A town in the north-east of the province, between Sierra Morena and Sierra de Segura, set in a landscape of hills and vast expanses of olive trees. Part of the local area is included in the Sierras de Cazorla, Segura y Las Villas Natural Park, the largest protected area in Spain. The park is a maze of valleys, limestone, gorges, mountains and plateaus and is an area of great hydrological importance owing to the large number of rivers and streams that spring within the park. It also contains a rich array of plant life (black pines, Aleppo pines, cluster pines and many endemic species), wildlife and hunting species.

Beas de Segura is one of the most visited natural spaces in the country. Within the municipal area is the reservoir known as Embalse del Tranco de Beas, one of the most beautiful places in the entire park. The town itself is a calm, white, harmonious setting for stand-out features like the Convento de las Carmelitas (Convent of the Carmelites), the Puente Mocho bridge, the Parroquia de Nuestra Señora de la Asunción (Church of Our Lady of the Assumption) and the Palacio de los Sandovales (Palace of the Sandovales).

Few villages can claim to be the source of inspiration for so many well-known writers and poets. Santa Teresa de Jesús, San Juan de la Cruz and Francisco de Quevedo were all captivated by Beas de Segura, the main town in Sierra de Segura, with its strategic location and legacy full of history.
