Bull's
culture

The province of Jaén is one of the territories in Spain with the greatest presence of activities around the fighting bull, a privileged place to get closer to the bullfighting world

The province of Jaén is one of the territories in Spain with the greatest presence of activities around the fighting bull, a privileged place to approach the bullfighting world, since it is one of the enclaves with the most bull farms and the greatest number of bullfighting festivals. The northwest of the province is characterised by the presence of the Sierra Morena mountain range, whose typical landscape is made up of oak woods where the bullfighting livestock finds a privileged space for breeding and exploitation. The presence of more than eighty cattle ranches has formed an interesting tourist map that revolves around the world of the fighting bull: from breeding to exploitation in the pastures, the trades, crafts and associated customs. Several of these farms have special programmes for tourism, including accommodation, and also offer possibilities for congress and incentive tourism.
This tourist offer has the added value of being located in the surroundings of two natural parks, Sierra de Andújar and Despeñaperros. In addition, the bullfighting tradition of this province has left its mark on the bullrings, bullfighting museums and on the festivities in their different variants throughout the province, even in traditions that still survive such as that of transhumance. We present you with an approach to the resources related to the bullfighting culture in the province of Jaén that are offered for tourist use. These are proposals that allow us to combine, in a unique experience for the senses, the deep-rooted bullfighting tradition of the province with the exceptional natural parks of Jaén, the Renaissance of the World Heritage cities Úbeda and Baeza, the Iberian-Roman city of Cástulo in Linares or the Route of the Castles and Battles. And all this in a unique place in the world for the practice of oil tourism: the culture of the olive grove and the olive oil in its pure state. Different tourist service companies in the province offer guided tours or packages that allow you to get closer to the bullfighting tradition.

Bullrings

Among the numerous bullrings distributed throughout the province of Jaén, there are some of special interest such as those of Andújar, Linares, Úbeda and Baeza, all of them from the 19th century. To these we must add the peculiar square of Segura de la Sierra, one of the oldest in Spain. The Plaza de Toros de Jaén capital (La Alameda) is the largest bullring in the province, with capacity for more than 10,000 spectators and a restaurant open to the public on the ground floor. Currently there is a program for tourist visits in Linares and Villanueva del Arzobispo (with a museum), while Segura de la Sierra is open to visitors, since it does not have an enclosure.

Popular Bullfighting Celebrations

The deep-rooted tradition of bullfighting in the province of Jaén is reflected in the more than one hundred popular bullfighting festivals held annually, mainly the release of cattle and the running of the bulls. This type of festive event is especially common in the regions of El Condado, Las Villas and Segura. It is worth mentioning the "Toros de San Roque" in Siles, the night-time running of the bulls in Iznatoraf, those in Chiclana de Segura, Sorihuela del Guadadalimar, Villacarrillo and Villanueva del Arzobispo. The "Toros Ensogados" festival stands out, which Beas de Segura celebrates in honour of San Marcos, and which has the distinction of being a festival of tourist interest.
