DESCRIPTION

The explanations offered here are very brief, and are no more than a presentation of this great itinerary, with the aim of locating its different stages as it passes through our province. The most important locations and reference steps are mentioned, but the explanation does not stop to inform about each and every detail of the road, actually formed by different types of roads, landscapes and conditions.
The completion of the entire itinerary in the province of Jaén will take between a week and ten days of long walks, with the highly recommended support of one or two vehicles to transport material. Passing through towns makes it possible to divide them and allows for shorter stages, depending on the interest of the group of hikers. The GR-7 was signposted and marked by the Andalusian Mountain Federation and the Ministry of Tourism, Commerce and Sports. Years later, part of the milestones have been lost, but by using traditional paths, their realization is still possible.
The path crosses the Córdoba-Jaén provincial boundary in Pilas de Fuente Soto, reaches Alcalá la Real and continues towards the village of Santa Ana, coinciding with a Cañada Real adorned with stone crosses that crosses a moor with the Castle of La Mota on the horizon. It passes through Santa Ana, it takes us to Frailes and then to Los Rosales, from where it continues along a paved road and then along rural roads.
It crosses several ports, including Los Alamillos, descends to the Valdearazo river and winds up again through Piedra del Palo, between Campillo de Arenas and Carchelejo, overlooking the Quiebrajano Reservoir. The road continues ascending to some plains before the town of Carchelejo, which is accessed by a paved road, through the upper part of the town, next to the deposits.
The path leaves the Sierra Sur and leaves Carchelejo following a path that descends in search of the old N-323 road, passing through a rock needle referred to as "El Diente de la Vieja". On the N-323 it continues to the highway, crosses it underneath and goes up the riverbed between orchards and poplar groves to access Cambil next to the town's treatment plant. From here we leave towards the Matabejid farmhouse, towards Huelma, to enter the Sierra Mágina Natural Park, with the highest peaks in the province of Jaén. We pass through Matabejid and follow a track towards Puerto de La Mata, passing through the Castillejo area, a magnificent landscape characterized by the ruins of a castle from the old medieval frontier. This mount of oaks and gall oaks is guarded by one of the most emblematic mountains of the province, La Peña de Jaén. This landscape has the peculiarity of being the dehesa de gallos in a limestone mountain, the highest in Spain. Crossing the Port the path runs through pine trees towards Torres, where we can refresh ourselves with the Fuenmayor water, and in the town at Pila Pellenda, at the entrance to the town, before continuing to Albánchez de Mágina by cattle trails, used as pedestrian paths between towns, accompanied by almond and cherry trees characteristic of this area, which offers an image of a bleached valley during its flowering.
On our way again, we pass through Fuente de la Fresneda and the Cuadros recreational area until we reach Bedmar, from where we will suddenly go up to El Portillo by one of the steepest ramps of the GR to go down to Jódar crossing the Serrezuela. We left Jódar towards the Jódar-Quesada railway station, we crossed the Guadiana Menor looking for Hornos de Peal, later Toya, and continued along the plain to Quesada.
We are now in the Sierras de Cazorla, Segura and Las Villas Natural Park. On leaving Quesada we will pass under the place known as El Chorro, in search of the Monastery of Monte Sión, and from here to the hermitage of San Isicio, near Cazorla. We will leave Cazorla along one of the most beautiful roads of the entire route, we will see the hermitage of the Virgen de la Cabeza, along a path between pines we will pass next to Fuente del Oso in search of the village of Vadillo Castril, then the village of Loma from Mª Ángeles, later, through the Natural Park of the Sierra de Cazorla, Segura and Las Villas, Cotorrios, and along the riverbed of the Guadalquivir, passing near the Aguamulas River, we go up to Fuente Segura to reach Pontones. From Pontones we continue to Poyotello, we go down along the riverbed of the young Zumeta River to the village of Los Ruices, in Santiago de la Espada, and finally we cross the provincial limit in the direction of Puebla de D. Fadrique, in Granada.
