Singular places

, Montizón

The Dajador reservoir is located in the NE of the Province of Jaén, included in its entirety in the municipal term of Montizón.

It is accessed by the road that crosses the El Condado region (A-312), with two options: from Castellar via the A-6203 after passing the towns of Aldeahermosa, Montizón and Venta de los Santos; or through the JA-9101 through Chiclana de Segura, which connects with the A-6203 in Venta de los Santos.

From this last nucleus, follow the A-6203 for 4 km. up to kilometer 43, where a narrow road emerges on the left which, after 4.5 km., leads us to the reservoir. From the neighboring province of Ciudad Real you should take the CM-3129 from Villamanrique, which at the provincial limit becomes the aforementioned A-6203.

The environment
The Dañado reservoir, owned by the state and managed by the Ministry of the Environment, belongs to the Guadalquivir Hydrographic Confederation, and is located at the eastern end of Sierra Morena. Here the relief is low, with gentle hilly formations, not reaching 1,000 m at any point in the surrounding geographical area. altitude. This entire area of ??the Northeast of the municipality of Montizón is based on very old materials, specifically slate and quartzites from the Paleozoic of the Meseta, since this is the area of ??contact with it.

Average rainfall exceeds 600 liters per square meter per year.
The reservoir is fundamentally fed by the waters of the short-length (53 km.) River Dajador, which is born in the Province of Ciudad Real and flows into the Province of Jaén in the Guadalén River, a tributary in turn of the Guadalimar and east last of the Guadalquivir.

Since 1997, this area has been under the environmental protection of the European Union called SCI (Site of Community Interest) due to the characteristics of its ecosystem and the biodiversity of wild fauna and flora. Specifically, this figure of protection extends over an area of ??more than 1,700 km. squares in the north of the Province of Jaén by the basins of the Guadalén, Guadalmena and Rumblar rivers.

From the natural point of view, the importance of these spaces lies in the presence of typical plant formations of the Mediterranean forest, some of them in good condition, as well as the existence of fauna species of special interest due to their scarcity. Among the former, it is worth highlighting the traditional holm oak, which is accompanied by other specimens of the Quercus genus, such as the cork oak, the gall oak and specific redoubts of melojo oak, species that shelter an undergrowth of noble Mediterranean scrub (strawberry tree, heather, mastic, cornicabra, barberry, labiérnago, kermes oak, etc.).

Also of great importance in the area are the masses of Pinus pinea and Pinus pinaster coming from repopulation, as well as the gallery forest formations in the water courses.

With regard to fauna, it is worth highlighting the existence of various game species (deer, wild boar, fallow deer, rabbits, etc.), as well as the isolated presence of some protected mammals such as the wolf, the lynx or the mongoose; of birds related to the aquatic environment, and of birds of prey of special interest such as imperial eagle, golden eagle, griffon vulture or eagle owl.
