DESTINATION INFORMATION

The town of Andújar is located at the foot of the Sierra Morena, constituting the gateway par excellence to the Natural Park of the same name. Because Andújar is a mountain range, Andújar is the Guadalquivir river that bathes it and divides it between the meadows of holm oaks and rocky areas to the north and the peaceful countryside to the south.

Andújar is a monumental city, rich in heritage and an emblem of typical architecture that shows a proud past. Among its most outstanding monuments we can mention the famous church of San Miguel, whose bell tower stands out from the urban landscape of the city. This Gothic church has the peculiarity of being the only religious temple that was once linked to the bishopric of Toledo in the province of Jaén, while the rest of the municipalities were attached to that of Baeza.

Next to this church we can find a large presence of religious buildings such as the church of San Bartolomé, the church of Santa Marina, as well as old convents and office buildings. Another of the architectural jewels of Andújar is its own Town Hall, which, located in the heart of the old town, stands out for its robust construction and its imposing plant.

Special mention should be made of the Virgen de la Cabeza Sanctuary, a large rock sanctuary located in the heart of Sierra Morena, where a large part of the Sierra can be seen from its privileged location. It is a place of pilgrimage famous for its pilgrimage and for its great cultural and ethnographic value.

As for civil buildings, Andújar still conserves some magnificent walls that extend over a large part of its old layout, including several watchtowers and remains of access gates to the old urban area. You should not miss visiting its bridge of Roman origin, which, with more than 310 meters in length and 14 eyes, is a magnificent example of this type of structure, having used red limestone masonry from the neighboring town of Marmolejo in its construction.

But, if the town of Andújar is famous for something, it is for its Natural Park, which, with an area of ??more than 74,000 hectares, constitutes the best example of Mediterranean forest on the Iberian Peninsula. Among its hills and valleys, there are many species, among which the Iberian Lynx stands out, which here preserves its best population, the Imperial Eagle or the Black Vulture. Many companies offer guided tours of the interior of the park, who knows ... Maybe you will find our big cat?
