Ruta de los castillos y batallas

Monument

0, Arjona

Arjona is included in the Route of Castles and Battles, this route runs through the province of Jaén and part of the province of Ciudad de Real and Granada. Arjona boasts one of the most complex fortification systems in Al-Andalus, with a triple line of defensive wall, which, together with Arjona's own strategic location, makes it an impregnable bastion. The origin of its wall system is found within the protohistory of the Iberian Peninsula, taking advantage of it by the successive cultures that have passed through it, and that have left their mark on its structure. Today part of this vast defensive system is preserved, also preserving a cistern from the Almohad period, located in the heart of the Alcazaba. In the Archeology Room of the Arjona Museum, there are remains of weapons used in medieval Islamic times, highlighting some arrowheads whose typology obeys those used in the Battle of Las Navas de Tolosa, also standing out inside the Sanctuary of Las Sagradas Reliquias, from a set of drawings and plans based on the manuscripts of the seventeenth century historian Martin Ximena Jurado, which shows us the aspect of the Arjona defense system at that time. . The visit ticket includes the guide and the entrance to all the monuments, museums and churches, except the Sanctuary of the Sacred Relics, the cost of the entrance to the Sanctuary is € 1, to be paid at the entrance of the same.
